Additional avenues to find HR talent are always needed. As is the case with many occupations, employers say that, despite high levels of unemployment, they can’t find people with the right HR skills and are always looking to increase workforce diversity. To address these needs, the SHRM Foundation has developed the Human Resource Registered Apprenticeship Program (HR RAP).

If you’re a business, it’s an opportunity to access, develop and retain the talent you need to grow now and in the future. If you’re a worker, it’s a chance to get a paycheck while training for advancement in one of America’s best-developed career pathways. And for the SHRM Foundation, it’s simply part of our mission to create a world of work that works for everyone.

Development of the HR RAP is possible through a grant from the US Department of Labor to the SHRM Foundation. This funding allows us to develop and implement or develop and sponsor registered apprenticeship programs, providing employers and apprentices high-quality programs that meet national independent standards for quality and rigor and that may qualify for federal or state financial resources.

The Gold Standard for Success

Because the program uses field-developed competency and knowledge standards developed by SHRM, employers and apprentices are assured that the program delivers the content needed to develop an HR professional ready to take on the 21st century.

“Apprenticeships are an important opportunity to help level the playing field for those who may not have taken a traditional educational path to a career. At CVS Health, our apprenticeship program has created a pipeline of diverse talent that has contributed immensely to our company. With more than 9,000 apprentices who have completed our program to date, we look forward to building on the program’s success.”

Ernie DuPont

Senior Director, Workforce Initiatives, CVS Health

“Our first apprentice really wanted to be a part of the HR professional path but did not know where to start. Now he gets to take advantage of the world-class learning that SHRM has to offer. He gets to take advantage of a new promising career in HR and he’s already adding tremendous value to our entire People team here at Hypertherm.”

Facts Not Myths

Apprenticeships provide career paths to many white-collar professions, NOT just unions and the trades.

Apprenticeship works for any program that is skill-based and that can be supported by experiential learning. Apprenticeships are growing in non-trade industries such as IT, health care, advanced manufacturing, insurance and hospitality.

Apprenticeships can be used in any size company.

Apprenticeship is ideal for any position that benefits from on-the-job learning and where there is a committed mentor.

A registered apprenticeship program can be modified to meet the needs of the employer and apprentice.

The program is designed with flexibility in mind, and minor adjustments can be made to make the program work for you.
